Meet the plant
Starry Hibiscus

Meet the starry hibiscus, New Zealand's native hibiscus, a soft-stemmed, delicate plant of warm, open coastal places. Each pale cream flower, marked by a deep maroon heart, opens for only a few hours before it fades, earning it the old name 'flower of an hour.'

The starry hibiscus (Hibiscus trionum) is a soft-stemmed annual or short-lived perennial of the mallow family, reaching about a metre, at home in warm, open, often coastal sites in the northern North Island. Its flowers are pale lemon to cream with a striking dark reddish-purple centre and delicate, papery petals. Each bloom is famously short-lived, opening in the morning sun and closing within hours, hence the old name 'flower of an hour.' Fleeting, it rewards those who catch it at just the right moment.

Explore Help Center
What is a stock flower essence?

A stock essence is the concentrated form of a single flower essence. It can be taken directly from the bottle or used to create a personalised blend.

First Light® stock essences are available as individual New Zealand native flower essences and combination essences, so you can choose and combine the essences to support how you are feeling or what you need help with.

How do I choose the right flower essence for me?

Start with how you are feeling and what you would most like support with right now.

You can explore keywords and information on each flower essence page, use the repertory to browse essences by feeling or need, or use the Constitutional Essence for a sense of inner balance and alignment.

If you would like a personal recommendation you can send us a message or book in for a no obligation free consultation.

How many essences can I combine?

Up to eight essences from No 1 to No 184 can be combined in a single personalised blend. No 0 Black Orchid can be added to any blend as a ninth essence.

This allows you to select a combination of essences to support the different emotional, energetic or personal growth needs.

Do flower essences contain alcohol?

Yes, generally flower essences contain a small amount of brandy, ethanol or grape as a natural preservative. To reduce the alcohol taste, add your drops to water.

How long does it take to notice a difference with flower essences?

It depends on the essence and the person. With an essence like Crisis Support for emergency or emotional first aid situations some people notice a difference within 15 to 20 minutes. Most people feel a shift within a few days. In general it takes about one month for changes to occur, and another month to integrate them.

As my Flower Power Essence Starry Hibiscus assists me greatly to bring awareness to my needs of self-nurture whilst enhancing my observation of bringing balance to my natural affinity to nurture others. It is only from this place of balance that I can be holistically well. I am reminded that I cannot assist others from an empty cup.
