Cook Strait Groundsel

Meet Cook Strait groundsel, a hardy coastal shrub of the wild southern shores of the North Island. Its rounded, grey-green leaves are backed with soft white felt, and in summer it throws out broad sprays of bright yellow daisy flowers that shine against the exposed rock.

Cook Strait groundsel (Brachyglottis greyi) is a spreading shrub in the daisy family, endemic to the rocky coast of the southern North Island, roughly from Flat Point south to the mouth of the Orongorongo River. It grows on wind-battered bluffs and outcrops facing Cook Strait, where new growth is clad in dense white wool that helps it weather salt and sun. Its leathery leaves are grey-green above and white beneath, and in summer it is crowned with large clusters of vivid yellow flowers. Tough, cheerful and utterly at home in harsh exposed places, its name is famous in gardens worldwide, though the plants sold under it are usually hybrids rather than the true wild species.

Explore Help Center
What is a stock flower essence?

A stock essence is the concentrated form of a single flower essence. It can be taken directly from the bottle or used to create a personalised blend.

First Light® stock essences are available as individual New Zealand native flower essences and combination essences, so you can choose and combine the essences to support how you are feeling or what you need help with.

How do I choose the right flower essence for me?

Start with how you are feeling and what you would most like support with right now.

You can explore keywords and information on each flower essence page, use the repertory to browse essences by feeling or need, or use the Constitutional Essence for a sense of inner balance and alignment.

If you would like a personal recommendation you can send us a message or book in for a no obligation free consultation.

How many essences can I combine?

Up to eight essences from No 1 to No 184 can be combined in a single personalised blend. No 0 Black Orchid can be added to any blend as a ninth essence.

This allows you to select a combination of essences to support the different emotional, energetic or personal growth needs.

Do flower essences contain alcohol?

Yes, generally flower essences contain a small amount of brandy, ethanol or grape as a natural preservative. To reduce the alcohol taste, add your drops to water.

How long does it take to notice a difference with flower essences?

It depends on the essence and the person. With an essence like Crisis Support for emergency or emotional first aid situations some people notice a difference within 15 to 20 minutes. Most people feel a shift within a few days. In general it takes about one month for changes to occur, and another month to integrate them.
