Sun Orchid

Meet the sun orchid, a slender ground orchid that keeps its flowers closed until the sun shines. On warm, still days its buds open into starry blooms, then quietly fold again, one of the small delights of New Zealand's open, sunny places.

Thelymitra is New Zealand's group of sun orchids, so named because their flowers open only in warm, bright sunshine and stay shut on cool or dull days. This terrestrial orchid grows from a tuber in open grassland, scrub, clay banks and gumland, sending up a single narrow leaf and a spike of several flowers. When the sun is high the blooms spread into neat, star-shaped flowers, often in shades of blue, mauve or white, unusual among orchids for looking so symmetrical and open. Māori knew various small tuberous ground orchids as maikaika. Because several closely related sun orchids look alike and can be hard to tell apart, they are often best appreciated simply as the cheerful sun-lovers of Aotearoa's sunlit clearings.

What is a stock flower essence?

A stock essence is the concentrated form of a single flower essence. It can be taken directly from the bottle or used to create a personalised blend.

First Light® stock essences are available as individual New Zealand native flower essences and combination essences, so you can choose and combine the essences to support how you are feeling or what you need help with.

How do I choose the right flower essence for me?

Start with how you are feeling and what you would most like support with right now.

You can explore keywords and information on each flower essence page, use the repertory to browse essences by feeling or need, or use the Constitutional Essence for a sense of inner balance and alignment.

How many essences can I combine?

Up to eight essences from No 1 to No 184 can be combined in a single personalised blend. No 0 Black Orchid can be added to any blend as a ninth essence.

This allows you to select a combination of essences to support the different emotional, energetic or personal growth needs.

Do flower essences contain alcohol?

Yes, generally flower essences contain a small amount of brandy, ethanol or grape as a natural preservative. To reduce the alcohol taste, add your drops to water.

How long does it take to notice a difference with flower essences?

It depends on the essence and the person. With an essence like Crisis Support for emergency or emotional first aid situations some people notice a difference within 15 to 20 minutes. Most people feel a shift within a few days. In general it takes about one month for changes to occur, and another month to integrate them.
