Forest Sedge

Forest sedge is a soft green native sedge of the New Zealand bush floor. It forms loose, arching tufts of fine leaves in the cool shade beneath the canopy, its slender flowering stems nodding gently where filtered light reaches down through the trees.

Forest sedge (Carex dissita) is a common native sedge of shaded, damp ground in New Zealand's forests and bush margins. It forms loose, spreading tufts of soft, arching mid-green leaves and sends up slender stems carrying drooping, greenish-brown flower spikes in spring and summer. Widespread through the North and South Islands, it thrives in the moist understorey of native bush, along stream banks and in gullies, and is one of the most useful sedges for forest and riparian restoration, knitting together shaded, moist soil and softening the ground beneath larger plants. As a member of the sedge family (Cyperaceae), it favours the cool, sheltered conditions of the forest floor, making it a quiet but essential part of the native bush ecosystem.

What is a stock flower essence?

A stock essence is the concentrated form of a single flower essence. It can be taken directly from the bottle or used to create a personalised blend.

First Light® stock essences are available as individual New Zealand native flower essences and combination essences, so you can choose and combine the essences to support how you are feeling or what you need help with.

How do I choose the right flower essence for me?

Start with how you are feeling and what you would most like support with right now.

You can explore keywords and information on each flower essence page, use the repertory to browse essences by feeling or need, or use the Constitutional Essence for a sense of inner balance and alignment.

How many essences can I combine?

Up to eight essences from No 1 to No 184 can be combined in a single personalised blend. No 0 Black Orchid can be added to any blend as a ninth essence.

This allows you to select a combination of essences to support the different emotional, energetic or personal growth needs.

Do flower essences contain alcohol?

Yes, generally flower essences contain a small amount of brandy, ethanol or grape as a natural preservative. To reduce the alcohol taste, add your drops to water.

How long does it take to notice a difference with flower essences?

It depends on the essence and the person. With an essence like Crisis Support for emergency or emotional first aid situations some people notice a difference within 15 to 20 minutes. Most people feel a shift within a few days. In general it takes about one month for changes to occur, and another month to integrate them.
