This coastal tree daisy is a wiry, twiggy New Zealand native whose small yellow-backed leaves belie a wonderful secret: in autumn its tiny flowers fill the air with a rich, heliotrope-sweet fragrance that drifts across estuary edges and salt marsh.

The fragrant spirit tree is Olearia solandri, a New Zealand native shrub or small tree in the daisy family (Asteraceae), commonly called Solander's tree daisy or coastal tree daisy. It has a densely branched, wiry, divaricating form with small, narrow leaves that are dark green above and covered in a yellowish, felty coating beneath, giving the whole plant a distinctive olive-gold cast. It grows naturally around the coast of the North Island and upper South Island, thriving on estuary margins, salt marshes, and coastal scrub where few other trees prosper. In late summer and autumn it produces clusters of small, unshowy flower heads whose scent is remarkably strong and sweet, often compared to heliotrope. Tough, wind- and salt-hardy, it is a quietly generous plant of New Zealand's coastal edges.

What is a stock flower essence?

A stock essence is the concentrated form of a single flower essence. It can be taken directly from the bottle or used to create a personalised blend.

First Light® stock essences are available as individual New Zealand native flower essences and combination essences, so you can choose and combine the essences to support how you are feeling or what you need help with.

How do I choose the right flower essence for me?

Start with how you are feeling and what you would most like support with right now.

You can explore keywords and information on each flower essence page, use the repertory to browse essences by feeling or need, or use the Constitutional Essence for a sense of inner balance and alignment.

How many essences can I combine?

Up to eight essences from No 1 to No 184 can be combined in a single personalised blend. No 0 Black Orchid can be added to any blend as a ninth essence.

This allows you to select a combination of essences to support the different emotional, energetic or personal growth needs.

Do flower essences contain alcohol?

Yes, generally flower essences contain a small amount of brandy, ethanol or grape as a natural preservative. To reduce the alcohol taste, add your drops to water.

How long does it take to notice a difference with flower essences?

It depends on the essence and the person. With an essence like Crisis Support for emergency or emotional first aid situations some people notice a difference within 15 to 20 minutes. Most people feel a shift within a few days. In general it takes about one month for changes to occur, and another month to integrate them.
