Golden Tree Fern

The golden tree fern is a sturdy New Zealand native with a thick, fibrous, red-brown trunk and a broad crown of arching fronds. Old, dead fronds form a warm skirt around its stem, giving it a solid, sheltering presence in the bush.

The golden tree fern (Dicksonia fibrosa), known in Māori as whekī-ponga, is a slow-growing native tree fern endemic to New Zealand. It has a stout, spongy trunk built from a thick mass of fibrous roots, which can hold moisture and even be used as a growing medium for other plants. Its dark green fronds are firm and leathery, forming a dense, rounded crown, while old fronds hang down and collect around the trunk as a distinctive brown 'skirt' or petticoat that helps protect and insulate it. It grows in lowland and montane forest, damp gullies and shaded slopes through both main islands, often in cooler, wetter areas. Long-lived and hardy, whekī-ponga is one of the classic tree ferns of the New Zealand forest and a favourite for gardens seeking a lush, primeval feel.

What is a stock flower essence?

A stock essence is the concentrated form of a single flower essence. It can be taken directly from the bottle or used to create a personalised blend.

First Light® stock essences are available as individual New Zealand native flower essences and combination essences, so you can choose and combine the essences to support how you are feeling or what you need help with.

How do I choose the right flower essence for me?

Start with how you are feeling and what you would most like support with right now.

You can explore keywords and information on each flower essence page, use the repertory to browse essences by feeling or need, or use the Constitutional Essence for a sense of inner balance and alignment.

How many essences can I combine?

Up to eight essences from No 1 to No 184 can be combined in a single personalised blend. No 0 Black Orchid can be added to any blend as a ninth essence.

This allows you to select a combination of essences to support the different emotional, energetic or personal growth needs.

Do flower essences contain alcohol?

Yes, generally flower essences contain a small amount of brandy, ethanol or grape as a natural preservative. To reduce the alcohol taste, add your drops to water.

How long does it take to notice a difference with flower essences?

It depends on the essence and the person. With an essence like Crisis Support for emergency or emotional first aid situations some people notice a difference within 15 to 20 minutes. Most people feel a shift within a few days. In general it takes about one month for changes to occur, and another month to integrate them.
