Hen and Chickens Fern

The hen and chickens fern earns its name honestly: tiny bulbils sprout along its finely divided fronds and grow into miniature ferns, little 'chickens' that eventually drop and root as new plants. Soft, lacy and generous, it carpets the shaded floor of damp native forest.

Asplenium bulbiferum is a graceful ground fern of moist lowland and coastal forest throughout New Zealand, with arching, feathery fronds that can reach well over a metre. Its most endearing trick is vegetative: small bulbils form on the upper surface of the fronds and develop into fully formed plantlets while still attached to the parent, so a single fern can raise a whole brood around itself. They then fall off and grow into new plants. The plant remains a favourite in shaded native gardens. It is a quiet emblem of nurture and renewal, forever making new life from its own reserves.

What is a stock flower essence?

A stock essence is the concentrated form of a single flower essence. It can be taken directly from the bottle or used to create a personalised blend.

First Light® stock essences are available as individual New Zealand native flower essences and combination essences, so you can choose and combine the essences to support how you are feeling or what you need help with.

How do I choose the right flower essence for me?

Start with how you are feeling and what you would most like support with right now.

You can explore keywords and information on each flower essence page, use the repertory to browse essences by feeling or need, or use the Constitutional Essence for a sense of inner balance and alignment.

How many essences can I combine?

Up to eight essences from No 1 to No 184 can be combined in a single personalised blend. No 0 Black Orchid can be added to any blend as a ninth essence.

This allows you to select a combination of essences to support the different emotional, energetic or personal growth needs.

Do flower essences contain alcohol?

Yes, generally flower essences contain a small amount of brandy, ethanol or grape as a natural preservative. To reduce the alcohol taste, add your drops to water.

How long does it take to notice a difference with flower essences?

It depends on the essence and the person. With an essence like Crisis Support for emergency or emotional first aid situations some people notice a difference within 15 to 20 minutes. Most people feel a shift within a few days. In general it takes about one month for changes to occur, and another month to integrate them.
