Meet the plant
Horopito

Horopito, the New Zealand pepper tree, is unmistakable in the bush: its yellow-green leaves are splashed with red and crimson blotches, and a single leaf tasted on the tongue delivers a slow, peppery heat.

Horopito (Pseudowintera colorata) is a native shrub in the family Winteraceae, an extremely old lineage of flowering plants whose simple structure has changed little over millions of years. Its oval leaves are marked with distinctive red and yellow mottling and edged with a purplish tinge. Crushed or chewed, the leaves release a hot, peppery bite from a natural compound, which has been said to give horopito genuine antifungal properties. Māori valued horopito in rongoā, using the leaves and bark to treat skin complaints, wounds and stomach troubles, and later settlers brewed it as a 'bushman's painkiller'. A team of researchers at the University of Canterbury were the first to isolate and identify Horopito polygodial content. This potent antifungal and anti-microbial compound has since drawn international attention. Sometimes called pepper tree or mountain horopito, it is a living link to the deep past of New Zealand's forests.

If you would like a personal recommendation you can send us a message or book in for a no obligation free consultation.

How many essences can I combine?

Up to eight essences from No 1 to No 184 can be combined in a single personalised blend. No 0 Black Orchid can be added to any blend as a ninth essence.

This allows you to select a combination of essences to support the different emotional, energetic or personal growth needs.

Do flower essences contain alcohol?

Yes, generally flower essences contain a small amount of brandy, ethanol or grape as a natural preservative. To reduce the alcohol taste, add your drops to water.

How long does it take to notice a difference with flower essences?

It depends on the essence and the person. With an essence like Crisis Support for emergency or emotional first aid situations some people notice a difference within 15 to 20 minutes. Most people feel a shift within a few days. In general it takes about one month for changes to occur, and another month to integrate them.
