Meet the plant
Red Matipo

Red matipo, or mapou, is easily spotted by its warm red-tinged twigs and leaf stalks and its wavy-edged, yellow-green leaves. A common small tree of New Zealand forests and margins, it holds tiny gland-dotted leaves up to the light and studs its branches with small dark berries.

Red matipo (Myrsine australis), also known as mapou, is a hardy native shrub or small tree in the family Primulaceae, growing to around six metres. Its most charming feature is colour: the young branchlets and leaf stalks are flushed a warm red, contrasting with pale, wavy-margined leaves that are dotted with tiny translucent glands, visible when a leaf is held to the light. Clusters of very small flowers form directly on the wood, ripening to little black or purple fruits that feed native birds. Widespread and adaptable, it grows throughout New Zealand in lowland forest, scrub and forest margins, and is often among the first trees to return to regenerating land. Its springy wood and pretty red-and-green colouring have long made it a familiar and well-loved presence in the bush, a small tree that quietly helps knit the forest back together.

Do flower essences contain alcohol?

Yes, generally flower essences contain a small amount of brandy, ethanol or grape as a natural preservative. To reduce the alcohol taste, add your drops to water.

How long does it take to notice a difference with flower essences?

It depends on the essence and the person. With an essence like Crisis Support for emergency or emotional first aid situations some people notice a difference within 15 to 20 minutes. Most people feel a shift within a few days. In general it takes about one month for changes to occur, and another month to integrate them.
