Meet the plant
Parataniwha

Parataniwha carpets the damp, shaded floor of North Island forests, its deeply wrinkled leaves flushed with coppery reds and purples. Find it beside cool streams and seepages, catching the soft light that filters down through the canopy, and you meet one of New Zealand's most beautiful native ground plants.

Parataniwha (Elatostema rugosum) is a soft, spreading ground cover in the family Urticaceae, endemic to New Zealand. It has richly textured, wrinkled leaves that glow in shades of bronze, red and deep green. It grows in damp, shaded places, often along streamsides and seepages in lowland to montane forest, forming lush colonies from North Cape south to the Kapiti and Tararua region. Its tiny papery fruits are flung out by the plant and carried onward by water, helping it colonise new banks. Taniwha are the guardian spirits of rivers and deep water, and parataniwha thrives in exactly the cool, wet, shadowed places where such guardians were said to dwell. It is a plant that belongs to the green edges of moving water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Explore Help Center
What is a stock flower essence?

A stock essence is the concentrated form of a single flower essence. It can be taken directly from the bottle or used to create a personalised blend.

First Light® stock essences are available as individual New Zealand native flower essences and combination essences, so you can choose and combine the essences to support how you are feeling or what you need help with.

How do I choose the right flower essence for me?

Start with how you are feeling and what you would most like support with right now.

You can explore keywords and information on each flower essence page, use the repertory to browse essences by feeling or need, or use the Constitutional Essence for a sense of inner balance and alignment.

If you would like a personal recommendation you can send us a message or book in for a no obligation free consultation.

How many essences can I combine?

Up to eight essences from No 1 to No 184 can be combined in a single personalised blend. No 0 Black Orchid can be added to any blend as a ninth essence.

This allows you to select a combination of essences to support the different emotional, energetic or personal growth needs.

Do flower essences contain alcohol?

Yes, generally flower essences contain a small amount of brandy, ethanol or grape as a natural preservative. To reduce the alcohol taste, add your drops to water.

How long does it take to notice a difference with flower essences?

It depends on the essence and the person. With an essence like Crisis Support for emergency or emotional first aid situations some people notice a difference within 15 to 20 minutes. Most people feel a shift within a few days. In general it takes about one month for changes to occur, and another month to integrate them.
