Toe Toe Grass

Toetoe is New Zealand's tallest native grass, forming great fountaining clumps topped with creamy, feathered plumes. Rising beside rivers, wetlands and roadsides, its silver-gold flower heads sway high above the long arching leaves, catching the wind in soft waves and glowing when the low sun slips through them.

Toetoe (Austroderia toetoe, formerly placed in Cortaderia) is an iconic native tussock grass, forming robust clumps up to four metres tall in flower. Its long, arching leaves have sharp edges and a pale midrib, and in summer it throws up tall stems tipped with dense, drooping plumes of creamy to golden flowers. It favours damp ground, freshwater swamps, streamsides and open wet places from the coast to lower hill country, often growing alongside harakeke (flax). Toetoe is deeply woven into Māori tradition: the tough, straight flower stalks and leaves were used for making kites, tukutuku panel work, walls and baskets, and the fluffy seed heads had domestic uses. It should not be confused with the invasive South American pampas grass, which it superficially resembles but which is far coarser.

What is a stock flower essence?

A stock essence is the concentrated form of a single flower essence. It can be taken directly from the bottle or used to create a personalised blend.

First Light® stock essences are available as individual New Zealand native flower essences and combination essences, so you can choose and combine the essences to support how you are feeling or what you need help with.

How do I choose the right flower essence for me?

How many essences can I combine?

Up to eight essences from No 1 to No 184 can be combined in a single personalised blend. No 0 Black Orchid can be added to any blend as a ninth essence.

This allows you to select a combination of essences to support the different emotional, energetic or personal growth needs.

Do flower essences contain alcohol?

Yes, generally flower essences contain a small amount of brandy, ethanol or grape as a natural preservative. To reduce the alcohol taste, add your drops to water.

How long does it take to notice a difference with flower essences?

It depends on the essence and the person. With an essence like Crisis Support for emergency or emotional first aid situations some people notice a difference within 15 to 20 minutes. Most people feel a shift within a few days. In general it takes about one month for changes to occur, and another month to integrate them.
