Gossamer Grass

Gossamer grass is New Zealand's own wind grass, a soft, arching native whose fine leaves shift through green, gold and coppery-red. In flower it sends up a fine haze of tiny seed heads that seem to float around the plant like a veil of gossamer in the breeze.

Gossamer grass (Anemanthele lessoniana, once known as Stipa arundinacea) is a graceful evergreen native grass and the only species in its genus. It forms fountaining clumps of slender, weeping leaves that change colour through the seasons, blending green with warm bronze, orange and red tones. In summer it produces long, delicate, much-branched flowering stems studded with tiny seeds, creating an airy shimmer that gives it its common names of gossamer grass, New Zealand wind grass and pheasant's tail grass. It grows naturally in coastal and lowland forest margins and rocky places, and is now widely planted in gardens worldwide for its movement and glowing colour.

What is a stock flower essence?

A stock essence is the concentrated form of a single flower essence. It can be taken directly from the bottle or used to create a personalised blend.

First Light® stock essences are available as individual New Zealand native flower essences and combination essences, so you can choose and combine the essences to support how you are feeling or what you need help with.

How do I choose the right flower essence for me?

Start with how you are feeling and what you would most like support with right now.

You can explore keywords and information on each flower essence page, use the repertory to browse essences by feeling or need, or use the Constitutional Essence for a sense of inner balance and alignment.

How many essences can I combine?

Up to eight essences from No 1 to No 184 can be combined in a single personalised blend. No 0 Black Orchid can be added to any blend as a ninth essence.

This allows you to select a combination of essences to support the different emotional, energetic or personal growth needs.

Do flower essences contain alcohol?

Yes, generally flower essences contain a small amount of brandy, ethanol or grape as a natural preservative. To reduce the alcohol taste, add your drops to water.

How long does it take to notice a difference with flower essences?

It depends on the essence and the person. With an essence like Crisis Support for emergency or emotional first aid situations some people notice a difference within 15 to 20 minutes. Most people feel a shift within a few days. In general it takes about one month for changes to occur, and another month to integrate them.
