Mangrove

The New Zealand mangrove, or mānawa, is the country's only mangrove, a remarkable tree that lives with its feet in the tide. It fringes northern estuaries and harbours, sending up strange finger-like breathing roots through the soft grey mud.

The New Zealand mangrove (Avicennia marina subsp. australasica), known in Māori as mānawa, is the southernmost mangrove in the world and the only one native to New Zealand. It grows in the intertidal zone of sheltered estuaries, tidal creeks and harbours across the upper North Island, from Northland down to about Kawhia and Ōhiwa. Superbly adapted to salty, waterlogged mud, it sends up numerous slender, pencil-like aerial roots called pneumatophores that stick out of the sediment to help the plant breathe when the tide covers its roots. It has small, leathery, grey-green leaves that excrete excess salt, and produces small yellowish flowers and buoyant seeds. Mangrove forests trap sediment, protect shorelines, and provide vital nursery habitat for fish, shellfish and birds. Mānawa is a keystone plant of New Zealand's northern coastal wetlands.

What is a stock flower essence?

A stock essence is the concentrated form of a single flower essence. It can be taken directly from the bottle or used to create a personalised blend.

First Light® stock essences are available as individual New Zealand native flower essences and combination essences, so you can choose and combine the essences to support how you are feeling or what you need help with.

How do I choose the right flower essence for me?

Start with how you are feeling and what you would most like support with right now.

You can explore keywords and information on each flower essence page, use the repertory to browse essences by feeling or need, or use the Constitutional Essence for a sense of inner balance and alignment.

How many essences can I combine?

Up to eight essences from No 1 to No 184 can be combined in a single personalised blend. No 0 Black Orchid can be added to any blend as a ninth essence.

This allows you to select a combination of essences to support the different emotional, energetic or personal growth needs.

Do flower essences contain alcohol?

Yes, generally flower essences contain a small amount of brandy, ethanol or grape as a natural preservative. To reduce the alcohol taste, add your drops to water.

How long does it take to notice a difference with flower essences?

It depends on the essence and the person. With an essence like Crisis Support for emergency or emotional first aid situations some people notice a difference within 15 to 20 minutes. Most people feel a shift within a few days. In general it takes about one month for changes to occur, and another month to integrate them.
