Kowhai

Kōwhai is one of New Zealand's most loved native trees, hung in early spring with cascades of golden, tubular pea-family flowers. Its fine, ferny leaves are made up of many tiny leaflets, giving the whole tree a light, feathery look. When it blooms, whole trees turn gold and fill with the song of nectar-feeding birds. Its bright bloom is woven through New Zealand life, celebrated in song, art and the turning of the year.

Kōwhai (Sophora microphylla) is a small to medium native tree found along streams, forest edges and open country through much of New Zealand. In early spring it bursts into hanging clusters of brilliant yellow flowers, a sight so beloved that kōwhai is often regarded as the country's unofficial national flower. The blooms are a feast for tūī and bellbirds, who help pollinate them. Its flowering marks the turn of the season, a golden signal that spring has come.

What is a stock flower essence?

A stock essence is the concentrated form of a single flower essence. It can be taken directly from the bottle or used to create a personalised blend.

First Light® stock essences are available as individual New Zealand native flower essences and combination essences, so you can choose and combine the essences to support how you are feeling or what you need help with.

How do I choose the right flower essence for me?

Start with how you are feeling and what you would most like support with right now.

You can explore keywords and information on each flower essence page, use the repertory to browse essences by feeling or need, or use the Constitutional Essence for a sense of inner balance and alignment.

How many essences can I combine?

Up to eight essences from No 1 to No 184 can be combined in a single personalised blend. No 0 Black Orchid can be added to any blend as a ninth essence.

This allows you to select a combination of essences to support the different emotional, energetic or personal growth needs.

Do flower essences contain alcohol?

Yes, generally flower essences contain a small amount of brandy, ethanol or grape as a natural preservative. To reduce the alcohol taste, add your drops to water.

How long does it take to notice a difference with flower essences?

It depends on the essence and the person. With an essence like Crisis Support for emergency or emotional first aid situations some people notice a difference within 15 to 20 minutes. Most people feel a shift within a few days. In general it takes about one month for changes to occur, and another month to integrate them.
