Maire

Maire, or black maire, is a slow-growing native hardwood of the New Zealand forest, carrying narrow, leathery leaves on a straight, solid trunk. It is famous for its dense, heavy timber, one of the hardest of all our native woods.

Black maire (Nestegis cunninghamii), a member of the Olive family grows into a tall, upright forest tree with narrow, dark, leathery leaves and small red drupes that ripen on the branches. It is best known for its wood: exceptionally hard, heavy and dense, so tough that it was highly valued by Māori for making weapons and durable tools. Being oily and slow-burning, maire also made superb firewood, prized for the long, steady heat and light it gave through the night. It grows in lowland and hill forest across much of the North Island and the north of the South Island. Long-lived and unhurried, maire embodies the quiet strength of the forest's dense hardwoods.

What is a stock flower essence?

A stock essence is the concentrated form of a single flower essence. It can be taken directly from the bottle or used to create a personalised blend.

First Light® stock essences are available as individual New Zealand native flower essences and combination essences, so you can choose and combine the essences to support how you are feeling or what you need help with.

How do I choose the right flower essence for me?

Start with how you are feeling and what you would most like support with right now.

You can explore keywords and information on each flower essence page, use the repertory to browse essences by feeling or need, or use the Constitutional Essence for a sense of inner balance and alignment.

How many essences can I combine?

Up to eight essences from No 1 to No 184 can be combined in a single personalised blend. No 0 Black Orchid can be added to any blend as a ninth essence.

This allows you to select a combination of essences to support the different emotional, energetic or personal growth needs.

Do flower essences contain alcohol?

Yes, generally flower essences contain a small amount of brandy, ethanol or grape as a natural preservative. To reduce the alcohol taste, add your drops to water.

How long does it take to notice a difference with flower essences?

It depends on the essence and the person. With an essence like Crisis Support for emergency or emotional first aid situations some people notice a difference within 15 to 20 minutes. Most people feel a shift within a few days. In general it takes about one month for changes to occur, and another month to integrate them.
