Meet the plant
Rasp Fern

The rasp fern is a small, tough ground fern with a surprise in its touch: its firm fronds carry a slightly rough, sandpapery texture that gives it its name. New growth flushes a soft rose-pink before hardening to deep green, a quiet moment of colour on the forest or coastal floor.

The rasp fern is a compact, hardy native fern, now known botanically as Blechnum parrisiae (long familiar as Doodia media). Its stiff, upright fronds are finely toothed and faintly abrasive to the touch, earning it the common name rasp fern; freshly unfurling fronds are tinted pink and red before settling to green. It is a resilient plant that thrives in open, sunny and sometimes dry places, along banks, coastal slopes, track edges and clearings where more delicate ferns cannot cope. That toughness makes it a familiar pioneer of disturbed ground and a favourite for planting, quietly holding soil and softening bare edges throughout much of the North Island and warmer parts of the South.

Frequently Asked Questions

Explore Help Center
What is a stock flower essence?

A stock essence is the concentrated form of a single flower essence. It can be taken directly from the bottle or used to create a personalised blend.

First Light® stock essences are available as individual New Zealand native flower essences and combination essences, so you can choose and combine the essences to support how you are feeling or what you need help with.

How do I choose the right flower essence for me?

Start with how you are feeling and what you would most like support with right now.

You can explore keywords and information on each flower essence page, use the repertory to browse essences by feeling or need, or use the Constitutional Essence for a sense of inner balance and alignment.

If you would like a personal recommendation you can send us a message or book in for a no obligation free consultation.

How many essences can I combine?

Up to eight essences from No 1 to No 184 can be combined in a single personalised blend. No 0 Black Orchid can be added to any blend as a ninth essence.

This allows you to select a combination of essences to support the different emotional, energetic or personal growth needs.

Do flower essences contain alcohol?

Yes, generally flower essences contain a small amount of brandy, ethanol or grape as a natural preservative. To reduce the alcohol taste, add your drops to water.

How long does it take to notice a difference with flower essences?

It depends on the essence and the person. With an essence like Crisis Support for emergency or emotional first aid situations some people notice a difference within 15 to 20 minutes. Most people feel a shift within a few days. In general it takes about one month for changes to occur, and another month to integrate them.

Absolutely LOVE this essence. I make up blends to support many of my clients . This year I felt a shift into needing stronger boundaries (more so than ever!), as have many of my clients so it beautifully supports this. No 38 Rasp fern promotes emotional consistency, and safety which is perfect for these turbulent times.
