Star Fern

The star fern spreads its fronds low and even, radiating out from a central crown in a soft green rosette that lies almost flat, like a star pressed into the forest floor. It loves the cool, damp company of streams and shaded banks.

Blechnum fluviatile (also placed as Cranfillia fluviatilis) is a distinctive native ground fern whose fronds spread outward in a neat, near-flat circle, giving it both its common name of star fern and its other names of creek fern and water fern. Known to Māori as kiwakiwa or kiwikiwi, it grows in shaded, moist places throughout New Zealand, especially along stream banks, seepages and the damp floor of native forest, where its ladder-like fronds carpet the ground. The taller, narrower fertile fronds rise from the centre of the rosette. A plant of quiet, watery corners, the star fern thrives where the forest stays cool and moist, tracing the lines of creeks through the bush.

What is a stock flower essence?

A stock essence is the concentrated form of a single flower essence. It can be taken directly from the bottle or used to create a personalised blend.

First Light® stock essences are available as individual New Zealand native flower essences and combination essences, so you can choose and combine the essences to support how you are feeling or what you need help with.

How do I choose the right flower essence for me?

Start with how you are feeling and what you would most like support with right now.

You can explore keywords and information on each flower essence page, use the repertory to browse essences by feeling or need, or use the Constitutional Essence for a sense of inner balance and alignment.

How many essences can I combine?

Up to eight essences from No 1 to No 184 can be combined in a single personalised blend. No 0 Black Orchid can be added to any blend as a ninth essence.

This allows you to select a combination of essences to support the different emotional, energetic or personal growth needs.

Do flower essences contain alcohol?

Yes, generally flower essences contain a small amount of brandy, ethanol or grape as a natural preservative. To reduce the alcohol taste, add your drops to water.

How long does it take to notice a difference with flower essences?

It depends on the essence and the person. With an essence like Crisis Support for emergency or emotional first aid situations some people notice a difference within 15 to 20 minutes. Most people feel a shift within a few days. In general it takes about one month for changes to occur, and another month to integrate them.
